Public Schools Vs. Home Schooling Essay When Americans think of education, they almost automatically think of public education. Through the years it is slowly changing. Many parents today are deciding to home school their children. Although most people think that a public education is better, most statistics and facts tend to show that home schooling is beneficial in more ways. It is estimated that parents are now teaching over two million children at home, rather than in public or even private schools. Education in our public schools has been on the down slope for over twenty years now. Public schools have lost all values and biblical morality. This was what our country was founded on and it has been replaced with humanism. One example of humanism in our schools is that they teach evolution, not creationism. Some people believe that this problem is happening because of the removal of God and prayer in public schools; the U. S. Supreme Court did this in 1962. Beginning in 1962, SAT scores plummeted. Teen pregnancies, teen sexual diseases, teen suicides, teen alcohol, drug abuse, pornography, and illiteracy rates abruptly increased 200 to 300 percent. Violence is one of the main factors effecting are schools today. Rape is a growing problem among juveniles. A juvenile commits one out of every five rapes that occur in the United States. There is also a higher use of drugs and alcohol among kids in public schools. Over 80 percent of public high school students drink alcohol and 45.7 percent have used marijuana. Drugs and alcohol make most people extremely violent. That is also on of the reasons why our violence and crime rates are so high. Over hundreds of millions of dollars are spend on the security of our Nations public schools. The Seattle Times once said, In Washington, D.C., drugs and violence were such a problem in one elementary school, that the principal banned regular recess, and the children are only allowed to play outside in a pit enclosed by eight-foot concrete walls, or on a small section of playground monitored by the police. The disciplinary problems of children usually start even before they reach public school. In the last ten years, research shows that infants raised in daycare are more prone to behavioral problems as young children than their home-reared cousins. If you keep your child at home from the start, you will be able to discipline and raise your children with the right morals. Because so much time is spend trying to clean up and keep our schools safe, we are more or less falling behind in our education. Americans are farther behind in educational status than countries such as Japan, Taiwan, and China. The teachers spend too much time on the little things and forget the real reason why the children are there. Not only that, but some of the textbooks hold inaccurate information and do not contain the whole story. Some textbooks stated that the atomic bomb ended the Korean War (instead of World War II) and that only 53,000, rather than 126,000 Americans, were killed in World War I. One book summarizes Abraham Lincolns and George Washingtons life in approximately six lines each. Not only are the wrong things written in the textbooks, they teach the children wrong values. In public school textbooks, marriage is never mentioned as the foundation of the family, and yet these books are supposed to be the textbooks that introduce the child to an understanding of American society. Critics of home schooling attack it on many fronts, arguing that children are not taught by qualified professionals, homes often do not possess the resources of schools, home-schooled children tend to be isolated from their peers, and systematic evaluation of childrens learning rarely occurs in the home. Yet, research does show that home schooled children are equal, if not better than, those students in public school environment are. Almost all reports have shown that home schooled students score above average on standard achievement tests. This could be because children have more one-on-one experience. Children that are taught at home tend to have stronger relationships with his or her family. This is because first, the children only usually spend, on the average, two to three hours per day receiving instructions. The typical student at a public school spends 367 hours (more than two hours a day) in activities such as lunch, recess, and class changing. There is a lot of time wasted each day that a child could be learning something else. At home also, the curriculum can be geared to fit the individuals need. The child can spend more time on what they need help in the most and this leaves more time for hands-on activities for the children to learn by. All in all, the children have more time to spend, at home, building relationships with their family. Many people are concerned about the social factor of home schooled children. Its a common belief that home schooled children will not develop the proper social skills to enable them to interact with others later in life. Many children that are home schooled today have formed their own social clubs. There are things ranging from their own basketball teams to 4-H Clubs. Some children even get together and go on field trips together almost once a week. Social skills are no longer a problem for home schooled children. The idea of public education has been debated for years. Students are being faced with so much violence and crime in todays public school system that parents are forced to find a suitable alternative. In the past few years, home schooling has had a tremendous rise and has proved to be very successful in providing effective education. Wal-Mart executives continue to rely on many of the traditional goals and philosophies that Sam's legacy left behind, while simultaneously keeping one step ahead of the ever-changing technology and methods of today's fast-paced business environment. The organization has faced, and is still facing, a significant amount of controversy over several different issues; however, none of these have done much more than scrape the exterior of this gigantic operation. The future also looks bright for Wal-Mart, especially if it is able to strike a comfortable balance between increasing its profits and recognizing its social and ethical responsibilities. Why is Wal-Mart so Successful? Is it Good Strategy or Good Strategy Implementation? -- In 1962, when Sam Walton opened the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas, no one could have ever predicted the enormous success this small-town merchant would have. Sam Walton's talent for discounts retailing not only made Wal-Mart the world's largest retailer, but also the world's number one retailer in sales. Indeed, Wal-Mart was named Retailer of the Decade by Discount Store News in 1989, and on several occasions has been included in Fortune's list of the 10 most admired corporations. Even with Walton's death (after a two-year battle with bone cancer) in 1992, Wal-Mart's sales continue to grow significantly. Wal-Mart is successful not only because it makes sound strategic management decisions, but also for its innovative implementation of those strategic decisions. Regarded by many as the entrepreneur of the century, Walton had a reputation for caring about his customers, his employees (or associates as he referred to them), and the community. In order to maintain its market position in the discount retail business, Wal-Mart executives continue to adhere to the management guidelines Sam developed. Walton was a man of simple tastes and took a keen interest in people. He believed in three guiding principles: 1. Customer value and service; 2. Partnership with its associates; 3. One of Walton's deepest beliefs was that the customer is always right, and his stores are still driven by this philosophy. International Trade Essay Why has international trade become less risky, less costly and even less time consuming then the past? Will business confidence likely grow even more in the future? There are multiple reasons for these common questions. Firstly, international trade has become less risky because traditional trade was regulated through bilateral treaties between two nations. For centuries under the belief in mercantilism most nations had high tariffs and many restrictions on international trade. Now most international trade among developed nations is based on Free Trade. Currently, the regulation of international trade is done through the World Trade Organization at the global level, and through several other regional arrangements such as MERCOSUR in South America, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Canada and Mexico, and the European Union between 27 independent States. Secondly, international trade has become less risky because of falling trade barriers. Trade barriers are often criticized for the effect they have on the developing world. Because rich-country players call most of the shots and set trade policies, goods such as crops that developing countries are best at producing still face high barriers. Trade barriers such as taxes on food imports or subsidies for farmers in developed economies lead to overproduction and dumping on world markets, thus lowering prices and hurting poor-country farmers. In addition, international trade has become less time consuming because humans have more resources then the past did. We have planes, trains, cargo ships, pipelines and even transport trucks that haul massive trailers. Earthquakes Earthquakes occur almost everyday all over the world. Most of the time earthquakes are not strong enough to be felt by people, but the shaking caused by an earthquake can be recorded by a seismometer. These machines are located all over the world to ensure detection of earthquakes of all strengths. Only occasionally will a larger magnitude earthquake strike and cause damage to the region. There are many faults around the world and depending on where these faults are plays a major factor in determining where an earthquake will occur. It is these faults that are the reason for earthquakes. The information seismologists know about past earthquakes and earthquakes in general give them a limited ability to generally predict when and where earthquakes are going to occur. An earthquake is the shaking of Earthââ¬â¢s surface caused by rapid movement of the earthââ¬â¢s rocky outer layer. ââ¬Å"Earthquakes occur when tension stored in rocks suddenly releasesâ⬠(Vogt 12). Faults occur at these places where rocks on either side of the crack have moved. Oceans are very common places for major tectonic plates to shift. When two plates separate, new oceanic crust is made near the fault as magma rises and eventually sets on the sea floor. If the plates on either side of the fault continue to spread then the ocean slowly becomes larger in width. This is called seafloor spreading. Mid-ocean ridges are characterized by a crack like valley at the fault. Obesity is a widespread epidemic that is taking a toll not only on the US, but also other parts of the world. There are many causes for obesity in young children that stem from genetics, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. Obesity in children not only puts them at many risks for disease during their early ages, but also puts them at risk for problems later in life. These risks for disease can be prevented through the combined efforts of parents, doctors, government, school systems, and the children themselves. People are starting to take action against childhood obesity in numerous ways so that they can shape the lives of children and adults by encouraging healthier lifestyles now and in the future. Childhood obesityââ¬â¢s various causes and effects are increasing at epidemic proportions; however, through different ways of prevention childhood obesity can make a turn for the better in the future. Obesity can be defined as an excessively high amount of body fat in relation to lean body mass (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity: The Effectsâ⬠). Obesity is the result of a ââ¬Å"caloric imbalanceâ⬠which is when too few calories are expended for the amount of calories consumed (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity Factsâ⬠). A child is not obese until his or her weight is at least ten percent higher than what is recommended for his or her height and body type (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Children And Teensâ⬠). People that become obese at a young age are at a high risk of becoming overweight in their adulthood. If one parent is obese, there is a 50 percent chance that the child will be, and if both parents are obese than the child has an 80 percent chance (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity: The Effectsâ⬠). Obesity generally starts between the ages of 5 and 6, or during adolescence. Studies show that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming obese when he or she enters adulthood (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Children And Teensâ⬠). One of the most important ways to decide whether someone is obese or not is based on BMI or Body Mass Index. BMI uses a mathematical formula, in which a personââ¬â¢s weight in pounds is divided by the square of the personââ¬â¢s height in inches and this result is thenà multiplied by 703. Then, the BMI-for-age and gender specific is put on a growth chart and the personââ¬â¢s condition is determined. BMI over the 95th percentile is considered overweight or obese (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity: The Effectsâ⬠). As more and more children join the BMI percentile considered obese, the statistics increase. Thirty percent of adults who are categorized as obese got this way from problems in childhood. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. The percentage of children aged 6 to 11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7 percent in 1980 to nearly 18 percent in 2012. In the same time period, obese adolescents aged 12 to 19 years have increased from 5 percent to 21 percent (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity Factsâ⬠). In 2005 a study showed that 12.5 million U.S. children and adolescents are considered obese, and with this number the average lifespan of all children could be lowered by up to five years (Manning). Although obesity is one of the easiest medical conditions to detect, it is one of the most difficult conditions to treat as obesity numbers grow to epidemic proportions. There is no single factor or behavior that causes obesity. Two of the most common factors that can be linked with the cause of obesity are genetic factors and lack of physical activity (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Childrenâ⬠). Genetic factors affect obese children when the childââ¬â¢s parents are obese or there is history of obesity in their family. However, genetics are not the only cause of obesity, and other factors must take place (ââ¬Å"Causesâ⬠). Lack of physical activity is becoming a more common factor as children are spending more time inside, and less time outside, or being active. Since technology is becoming a huge part of modern childrenââ¬â¢s lives, activities such as watching television, gaming, texting, and playing on the computer, all of which require very little energy, replace the physical activities which the children should be taking part in. Also, when children watch television, they often see commercials for unhealthy high-calorie snacks, and thus crave these foods. Another source for obesity is medical conditions, and although it is rare, it does sometimes occur. Hormone disorders or low thyroid function, and certain medications, can cause a childââ¬â¢s appetite to increase,à which in time can increase their risk for obesity (ââ¬Å"Causesâ⬠). Also, if a child has a medical illness such as neurological problems, they can become obese (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Children And Teensâ⬠). Unhealthy eating habits are a prominent cause of obesity in children. When children are at young ages, their parents will tell them to finish everything on their plate, which forces the children to ignore their fullness. When this behavior is repeated over many years, it becomes a habit, and can cause a person to eat whether they are hungry or full, and the habit is often very hard to break. Also, when parents have less time to plan and prepare healthy meals, their child usually ends up eating more processed and fast foods that are less healthy than home-cooked meals. If a childââ¬â¢s parents or siblings are overweight and have poor diet and exercise habits, the child is most likely to adopt these same habits (ââ¬Å"Causesâ⬠). When stressful life events or changes, such as divorce, moves or deaths occur in a childââ¬â¢s life, they often seek food for comfort (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Children And Teensâ⬠). As well as in the home and family, school and community resources also influence a childââ¬â¢s habits regarding diet. Vending machines and convenience stores rarely sell healthy foods, however they make it easy to grab a quick snack that is usually high in calories or fat. Restaurants reinforce the unhealthy habit by advertising high-calorie foods and large portion sizes. Schools have an important role in teaching students about healthy food choices and exercise, however not all schools offer these healthy choices or time for physical activity (ââ¬Å"Causesâ⬠). These causes, which lead to obesity, have many immediate and long-term effects. Some of the immediate effects include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, prediabetes, bone and joint problems, and skin conditions such as fungal infections and acne (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Childrenâ⬠). Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults, which puts them at greater risk for adult health problems. A few of these long-term effects include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer, and osteoathritis (ââ¬Å"Child Obesity Factsâ⬠). However, some diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, which are thought of to be long-term effects, have increased dramatically in overweight children and adolescents (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity: The Effectsâ⬠). Childhood and adolescent obesity also has many mental health effects, and is associated with increased risk of emotional problems. The most immediate consequence of being overweight is social discrimination and low-self-esteem. In 2003 a study asked 106 children between the ages of 5 and 18 to rate their quality of life based on things like their ability to walk more than one block, play sports, sleep well, get along with others, and keep up in school. The study showed that obese children would often rate themselves with scores as low as those of a young cancer patient on chemotherapy. The results showed that teasing at school, difficulties playing sports, fatigue, sleep apnea and other problems severely affected the childrenââ¬â¢s well-being (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity: The Effectsâ⬠). Low-self-esteem leads to many cases of depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder found in obese children (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Children And Teensâ⬠). Although obesity greatly affects a personââ¬â¢s well being, there are many ways to prevent obesity from becoming worse and to help obese children get on the right path for adulthood. Children and adolescentââ¬â¢s dietary and physical behaviors are influenced by many parts of society, including families, communities, schools, child care settings, medical care providers, faith-based institutions, government agencies, the media, and the food, beverage, and entertainment industries (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity Factsâ⬠). One of the most successful ways to help an obese child is through his or her family, by providing support and helping to make lifestyle changes. Family members can plan activities such as walking, biking, or swimming, and can reduce the amount of sedentary activities (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Childrenâ⬠). Parents can lower the amount of fatty and sugary foods the child is eating, and can emphasize healthy eating by having fruits, vegetables and low-fat snacks available (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity: The Effectsâ⬠). Schools also play a crucial role in establishing a supportive environment, by providing the children with opportunities to learn about and practice a healthy eating and physical lifestyle (ââ¬Å"Childhood Obesity Factsâ⬠). Children can also attend support groups, which are helpful because the others around them are dealing with the same issue. When a child or adolescent also has emotional problems, aà psychiatrist can work with the familyââ¬â¢s physician to develop a treatment plan, that would include weight loss goals, dietary and physical activity management, behavior modification, and family involvement. Obesity often becomes a lifelong issue, so by learning at a younger age to eat and enjoy healthy foods in moderate amounts and to exercise regularly can prev ent the child from ever becoming obese (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Children And Teensâ⬠). As the importance of prevention spreads, more and more communities nationwide are taking steps to fight against childhood obesity. Many foundations have been started, such as the Robert Johnson Wood Foundation, which declared a goal of reversing childhood obesity by 2015 and has put millions of dollars into the effort. The Wood foundation partnered with the YMCA of the USA to bring together activists, government officials, school administrators and parents, the medical community, and other leaders to broadcast a possible attack on the problem. The foundation funded efforts in 6 states and 32 communities. They have created policy changes in communities, such as purchase of healthier food and serving it in schools, the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables at corner stores, and increasing physical activity in school and after school programs and in the community through better transportation systems such as bicycle and walking trails (ââ¬Å"Communitiesâ⬠). Foundations are at tempting to make the purpose of physical activity and following a healthy diet a use of the opportunities children have to be active and healthy, rather than being a chore (ââ¬Å"Obesity in Childrenâ⬠). Obesity is an ongoing epidemic that is affecting a bounteous number of children every day. There are lots of causes for obesity in youth that can expose them to disease and other problems during their early childhood and adolescence, as well as later in life. However, these immediate and long-term effects are being noticed and are starting to be prevented. People across the nation are becoming involved in foundations that are trying to hinder childhood obesity and take steps toward healthier lifestyles for children. Although childhood obesity has a profuse count of causes and effects, and the statistics show an intimidating growth in numbers, prevention of childhood obesity can make for a healthier society and aà decrease in the amount of people who are impacted by this malady.

A presidential or congressional candidate has to prove her/his foreign policy knowledge on the campaign trail, but unfortunately the electorate is generally not informed enough to critically assess a candidateââ¬â¢s understanding, which risks giving our leaders virtually unchecked power to make policy in our name.
